About the event

On December 13 at 7pm Eastern, Con Alma, a live binational communal experience broadcast from Mexico City and New York City will be released on digital platforms, TV and radio presented by National Sawdust, the Mexican Ministry of Culture, TV Canal 22, WNET All Arts, and WQXR. Over 2 million viewers are anticipated to tune in on public TV, radio, and screens in over 10 major Mexican cities and throughout the U.S.

Ashley Tata, currently an artist-in-residence at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and one of the foremost theatrical and multimedia directors, is creating the live digital experience of music videos, live-drawings by Kevork Mourad, and real-time storytelling with the creators and performers of these works.

Paola Prestini and Mexico-based singer-songwriter Magos Herrera (plus a crew of musicians) used the lockdown to collaborate at a distance, and the result is a melancholy but uplifting quasi-cantata full of bird calls, phone calls, and calls across frozen borders.

Technological Innovations

  • The Con Alma launch event is an expansion of what digital performance can be, combining pre-filmed musical performance, live performance art overtop recorded audio, and live unscripted conversation

  • The goal is to create a sense of connection and ephemerality in the digital space - though we cannot be together in the same place geographically, we can still be together in time, sharing a common experience together.

  • In addition to the multi-level performances of the event itself, the Con Alma launch will also incorporate a broader social media component, drawing feedback directly from the viewing audiences on the fly.
